Preliminary results from this season’s Home Grown Cereal Authority (HGCA) funded survey indicate that levels of the fusarium grain mycotoxins; deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone, were particularly high as a result of wet weather during the wheat crop flowering period in some regions and the wet harvest. Mycotoxins are one of the most serious of naturally occurring toxins, which can contaminate the food supply for both animals and humans. When decisions are being made about the safety of thousands of tonnes of grain, it is crucial that the test data is reliable. Grain traders and end users testing grain for mycotoxin contamination rely on mycotoxin reference standards to ensure the accuracy of their results.
