LGC Standards extends range of GMO standards to meet EC recommendations02-06-2011 Comprehensive range of GMO reference materials certified to ISO Guide 34
LGC Standards, Europe’s leading supplier of reference materials, is pleased to announce that a new range of genetically modified (GM) certified reference materials (CRMs) are now available. Produced by the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), these CRMs meet the recommendations from the European Commission.
Recommendation (EC) No. 787/2004 suggests that results of the content of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food and feed should be expressed as copy number ratios. IRMM has released a string of plasmidic DNA materials: ERM-AD413, ERM-AD415, ERM-AD425 and ERM-AD427 intended as calibrants for the determination of GMO copy number ratios for GM varieties authorised in Europe. The materials have been processed and certified according to ISO Guide 34 by the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), which is one of the institutes of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.
In addition to these new plasmidic DNA certified reference materials, certified values for copy number ratios have been assigned in addition to the existing certified mass fractions to a selection of existing matrix CRMs to allow laboratories to implement this recommendation.
| CRM | Description | | ERM-BF413ek | MON 810 maize powder (level 3) | | ERM-BF415e | NK603 maize (level 4) | | ERM-BF425c | Soya 356043 (level 2) | | ERM-BF427c | 98140 maize (level 2) |
With the copy number certification (and the matching plasmidic calibrant) LGC Standards and IRMM are supporting analysts wishing to apply the Commission recommendation with quality assurance and measurement tools to do so in a controlled manner.
Jane Firth, Sector Manager at LGC Standards, said: “Calibration and analysis of matrix materials for quality control are both critical stages in ensuring the ongoing performance of an analytical method. These GMO standards provide the analyst with sets consisting of a matrix CRM for quality control and a plasmid DNA CRM suitable for calibration. Together with the event-specific PCR method, this forms a reference system for the expression of the measured GM quantity in copy number ratios as described in the current EC Recommendation.”
LGC Standards supplies the complete range of GMO certified reference materials from IRMM including maize, cotton seed and sugar beet, which can be used as calibrants for DNA-based methods. Please contact askus@lgcstandards.com for further information.
