LGC Standards offers reference materials for 31 legal highs banned by new 2010 Europol Report

Date:13 May 2011

Since April 2010, LGC Standards, Europe?s leading supplier of reference materials, has been characterising and developing reference materials to assist forensic, clinical and toxicology laboratories to identify and quantify ?legal high? drugs or ?research Chemicals? such as mephedrone, methiopropamine, MDAI and methoxetamine.

The European Monitoring Centre for Drug and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) - Europol 2010 Annual Report on New Drugs*, lists 41 psychoactive substances that had been officially reported to either organisation for the first time in 2010. The substances reported include novel cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids and stimulants which are commonly termed ?legal highs? or ?research chemicals?. While many of these substances were completely new chemical compounds, a number of the reported substances had previously been reported in scientific literature as potential therapeutic agents.

The ?legal highs? reference material programme?s specific aims were to produce and source high quality ?legal high? or ?research chemical? reference materials with many of the novel compounds being produced at LGC Standards? facility in Luckenwalde, Germany. To date, the programme has sourced or produced over 330 primary drug reference standards, including 31 of the materials listed in the EMCDDA-Europol report.

Dr Peter Pack, Managing Director of LGC Standards said: ?LGC Standards? production and supply strategy is such that we have been able to bring to market many of these products far more rapidly than traditional reference material production would permit, whilst maintaining the quality of the final product. We are already anticipating what new legal highs may appear in 2011 and beyond and have produced a number of products in advance to allow laboratories to meet these new analytical challenges.?
