Ion Channels for Cancer Therapy

Ion channels are transmembrane proteins that are important for the proliferation and response of immune cells attacking tumour cells. They facilitate the permeation of specific ions between intra- and extra-cellular environments and play a significant role in tumour cell functions, such as proliferation, migration, volume regulation, cell survival and apoptosis. Since these ion channels are important for the survival of cancer cells, they are referred as “oncogenic channels”.

Ion channel inhibition has the potential to reduce migration and invasion of cancer cells, as well as block tumour angiogenesis pathways, and although further work is needed to fully understand ion channel function in carcinogenesis and possible side effects, it is a focal area for current research.
