The Analytical Reference Materials International 90/10 Share Program

The 90/10 Share Program is a simple, cost effective service that develops new commercial certified reference materials (CRMs) that are not readily available to the scientific consumer.  Many common alloy materials are well represented with CRMs, while spectrochemical standards are essentially non-existent for up to 85% of alloys extant today.  We launched our 90/10 Share Program in May 1990 specifically to create CRMs for special customer applications, while sharing the tasks and the costs of development.

The process begins when the customer chooses the specific alloy(s) to be tested.  Representative material is furnished to us, usually in the form of round bar stock.  The bar stock should be a minimum of 1.25 inches in diameter, up to an ideal O.D. of 1.5 inches.  The bar should be 10 to 12 feet in overall length.  Non-bar stock forms are acceptable as long as there is sufficient material quantity as needed for the laboratory examinations.  The material is then processed through our Inter-Laboratory Analysis Program (ILAP) for certification as a CRM.

The customer is only responsible for the cost of the donated material.  Alternatively, if necessary, we will assist in location and acquisition of suitable material through a network of well-established vendors who can supply most alloy materials.

Approximately 30% of the material is consumed in the analysis process.  10% of the remaining material is returned to the customer after certification in any form desired (solids, chips, X-Ray discs, etc.), and we retain the balance for commercial sale.

The final result creates one new CRM that is traceable to NIST values.   The CRM is then ready to be shared with the scientific community.
