LGC Standards is a division of LGC Group, the UK’s designated National Measurement Institute for chemical and bioanalytical measurements. We are a leading global manufacturer and service provider of quality assurance and research tools, supporting your analytical needs in more than 120 countries worldwide. We use our expertise to produce to the highest standard, including ranges produced under ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited to ISO 17034. Our wide range of reference materials and proficiency testing schemes is complemented by our experience in outsourcing and customs, enabling us to adapt quickly to provide tailored solutions to meet your analytical needs.
Our origins can be traced back to 1842, when the Laboratory of the Board of Excise was founded to regulate tobacco adulteration. In 1875 the laboratory was appointed 'referee analyst', in landmark legislation specifically designed to protect the consumer. While we have significantly expanded our activities to support the wider analytical science community, to this day LGC hosts the unique function of the Government Chemist, providing expert opinion through independent chemical and bioanalytical measurement.
We innovate and apply science in order to ensure the safety and integrity of products and services in line with our vision: Science for a safer world. We are passionately committed to go beyond the ordinary, in collaboration with our employees, our customers, and with absolute quality. Our values of Passion, Curiosity, Integrity, Brilliance and Respect embody our dedication to using science to support our customers in making the world safer, and are deeply rooted in all our behaviours.
In pursuit of science for a safer world, we are dedicated to quality assurance and providing high quality certified reference materials and proficiency testing services, in accordance with the requirements of internationally recognised accreditations. In choosing us, you choose a product certified to the quality you need and manufactured in an accredited facility, you choose a history of expertise and depth of experience, you choose expert advice in your local language and time zone, all to support your testing and accuracy.
We are proud to connect with our customers across a global network, with dedicated local teams able to support your reference standard decisions and the implementation of our products in your analytical testing. Our state-of-the-art global logistics and distribution capabilities, together with experienced supply chain and export departments, ensure fast delivery to our customers.
What we do
We offer a portfolio of 300,000+ reference materials and analytical standards, including ranges produced under ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited to ISO 17034. Our products are used to check the quality and metrological traceability of products, to validate analytical measurement methods, for research and development, and for the calibration of instruments. As the UK’s designated institute for chemical and bio-measurement, we use the most advanced
analytical techniques to characterise our reference standards, so that you can rely on the scientific integrity of the data contained in your Certificate of Analysis. We also provide proficiency testing schemes accredited to ISO 17043 and used by more than 13,000 participant labs worldwide, as well as full-spectrum outsourcing and custom solutions to meet all your analytical needs.
Real world applications
How do you protect crops at the same time as protecting pollinators? Popular neonicotinoid pesticides, which make up 25% of the global agrochemical market, are a key cause of hive death. That's where we come in. Analytical laboratories need to test food, beverage and environmental samples for neonicotinoids, to meet changing regulatory requirements.
Food safety city
Xiamen, as one of the largest export hubs in the world, is a model 'food safety city', and we partner with the local government to keep it at the cutting edge and monitor quality and accuracy. This vital work helps safeguard food quality and protect consumers, both within China and in the rest of the world.
Valsartan pharmaceutical impurities
When widely used blood pressure drugs were found to be contaminated with a carcinogenic impurity, our scientists sprang into action: we quickly developed a high quality Mikromol reference standard to help protect both consumers and manufacturers from the impact of adulterated drug batches.
Viral epidemics have become a global public health focal point. We help assay developers and clinical labs respond to outbreaks like the Ebola and Zika epidemics of the last few years. Our proprietary AccuPlex recombinant viral materials are safe to handle and non-infectious, yet also resemble complex clinical virus targets.
Glyphosate is the world's most widely used herbicide, but regulators are starting to crack down on its use. We offer a comprehensive portfolio of Dr. Ehrenstorfer glyphosate reference materials and LGC proficiency testing samples, giving our customers confidence that their analytical data is accurate, and that products meet even the most stringent regulations.
Fracking groundwater monitoring
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is increasingly being used to unlock vast untapped natural gas deposits, but concerns about groundwater contamination at drill sites are widespread. We’re the first company to offer an SI-traceable certified reference material for light hydrocarbon gases in water, to support testing for contamination and protect access to safe, clean water.
Vitrakvi cancer therapy
Advances in patient care enable better matching of the right patient with the right treatment. We are developing Seraseq NTRK fusion RNA reference standards, to assist doctors in diagnosing a cancer’s underlying causes. This means that treatment can target the root problem, giving eligible patients access to potentially life-saving Vitrakvi therapy.
Tumour mutational burden
Tumour mutational burden, or TMB, is the most promising genotyping biomarker for positive immuno-oncology therapeutic response. We're at the forefront of efforts to help standardise TMB testing and use, so doctors can deliver better patient care, building custom Seraseq TMB reference standards to harmonise measurements across NGS assays.
Food safety certification
Working with us to achieve BRCGS Food Safety Certification enables businesses worldwide to cement their reputations as quality food manufacturers. Our Food Safety standard, the first to be GFSI-benchmarked, offers a systematic, concise approach that covers all aspects of food production, from food safety and traceability to processes and food defence.
