Dr Ehrenstorfer: what’s new this month - March 2022

no image

The world has again put its faith in science to solve the problems of our natural environment, with the adoption of important motions on plastic and chemical pollution at the recent United Nations Environment Assembly. To defeat the growing menace of chemical pollution, delegates backed the creation of a new Science-Policy Panel to assess the problems the world faces, ‘catalyse’ scientific research and raise public awareness. At Dr Ehrenstorfer, we are proud that our research materials are already helping support laboratory analysis of global chemical and plastic pollution, and will also contribute to future solutions for a safer world. Here, we invite you to take a look at our latest product updates, and get in touch to find out how we can help your work.

Mixtures

We realise that mixtures can help save time and improve productivity in your laboratory, and are therefore continuously creating new products to meet our customers’ needs. This month, we are releasing 11 new mixtures covering a wide range of analytes with potentially polluting effects on the environment and adverse consequences for human health - including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes and other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Food Contact Materials

As food products go through the manufacturing and packaging processes, they meet with various Food Contact Materials (FCMs). FCMs must comply with a number of regulations, including good manufacturing practices, so that any potential transfer to foods does not compromise food safety. However, a number of FCMs - such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and bisphenols - are now known to damage human or animal health or persist in the environment. This month, we are releasing nine new FCM-related reference materials, with analytes including Perfluorodecanesulfonic acid - a perfluoroalkyl substance that has been detected in lake trout - and Bisphenol TMC, a bisphenol derivative used in the preparation of polycarbonate, polyester and epoxy resins which the European Chemicals Agency describes as “very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.”

Metabolites

The laboratory analysis of metabolites is a useful tool in ensuring that a wide range of chemical compounds are being used in line with regulatory requirements, and in assessing the potential contamination of soil, water and aquatic life. The 11 new metabolite reference materials we are releasing for sale this month therefore cover a broad range of applications and analytes - including metabolites of pharmaceutical and veterinary compounds, pesticides (insecticides, fungicides and herbicides), dyes and VOCs.
